This should show the user how to make sure ThunderBird is configured with the correct settings and further troubleshooting tips.
1) Make sure ThunderBird is configured correctly.
Upon opening Thunderbird go to the top to Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings. Note: You might need to press the Alt key located on the bottom of the keyboard on the left-hand side of the Space Bar to got Tools to appear. Make sure your server name is "pop.emypeople.net" and port is set to 995. Username is your email address. Connection Security should be set to SSL/TLS and authentication to Normal Password.
Now for the outgoing server settings. Click on Outgoing Server(SMTP) and press Edit.
Make sure the server name is smtp.emypeople.net. Port is 587 and connection security is None. Authentication method is Password, transmitted insecurely. You can also set it to use port 465 with connection security set to SSL/TLS. Connection security should be normal password.
Common errors:
1) An error occurred with the POP mail server. The mail server pop.emypeople.net responded:
The reason for this error is because your IP address has been blacklisted. In simpler terms, you tried logging on to the mail server to send and receive emails with the wrong password or incorrect settings to many times and you are now blocked because the mail server has mistaken you for a hacker. The fix? Try sending a message and you'll receive a different error: " An error occurred sending mail. The mail server sent an incorrect greeting. 4.7.1 Intrusion Prevention active for " your IP address ".
Call in (717-277-0200) and be prepared to give a technician the number (IP Address) at the end of the error message. Once it's working, go back and make sure you've set ThunderBird to use the correct settings.
2) Sending of message failed: SMTP server smtp.emypeople.net is unknown. The server may be incorrectly configured. Please verify that your SMTP server settings are correct and than try again.
This is caused when there is no connection or your smtp server is not configured correctly. If you just changed your account settings in ThunderBird go back and make sure you entered them correctly. Otherwise, if it was working and you did not mess with any settings it's very likely that something has gone wrong with your connection.
